If you are not a certificated teacher and you wish to coach at a Nebraska high school, the new provisional trades program with a coaching endorsement offers two choices to gain a temporary permit:
1. Complete the following six competencies from a four-year college with an approved teacher education program - Prevention, care and management injuries; Risk management; growth, development and learning; training, conditioning and nutrition; Psychology of coaching; Coaching theory and methods
2. Complete the ASEP Coaching Principles and ASEP Sport First Aid courses being offered by the NSAA.
Completion of either #1 or #2 above can result in a one-year temporary provisional trades certificate. A second one-year extension on the temporary certificate can be issued.
NEXT STEP: Eventually, likely during the time while holding a temporary certificate, a person can complete the requirements and secure a provisional trades coaching certificate by the following:
a. Pass one of the prescribed basic skills competency tests required of all Nebraska teachers and have a score report sent to the Department of Education, Teacher Certification Office.
b. Successfully complete a human relations training class required of all Nebraska teachers and have the official transcript sent to the Teacher Certification Office.
c. Successfully complete a three semester hour course in a four-year college which trains teachers on special education (this should be a survey course covering all handicapping conditions).
d. Complete the endorsement requirements listed in #1 above.
